History of Beaverton
Beaverton takes its name from the beaver dams that once filled the valley, creating extensive wetlands. The area was originally inhabited by the Atfalati (Tualatin) band of Kalapuya people. European settlement began in the 1840s, and Beaverton was officially incorporated in 1893. For much of its early history, Beaverton was a small agricultural town surrounded by farms, dairies, and orchards. Major transformation began in the 1960s and 1970s when Tektronix built its headquarters in Beaverton, followed by Nike's arrival, which established Beaverton as a globally significant tech and athletic apparel center.
